"I just think it’s easier to design more intricate combats," Sawyer remarked during his interview. He elaborated that real-time systems present challenges in terms of player comprehension, stating, “The problem with real time with pause is that it’s honestly very difficult for people to actually parse all of that information.” He noted increased clarity in gameplay dynamics, such as the affliction and inspiration systems, when played in turn-based mode.

Challenges Remain

Despite the enthusiastic adoption of turn-based mechanics, Sawyer acknowledged fundamental design challenges. He pointed out that Deadfire was originally crafted for real-time combat, which means that the turn-based mode may not fully resonate with the original game’s design philosophy. He suggested that while the transformation provides valuable insights, it may not be replicable in the preceding title, Pillars of Eternity. "There could be lessons learned from PoE 2‘s transformation to apply," he noted, hinting at potential future enhancements.
