Ivy Announces First New Album in 15 Years: "Traces of You"
The beloved indie-pop trio Ivy, known for their influential sound in the 1990s and featuring the late Adam Schlesinger, has officially announced the release of their highly anticipated first album in 15 years. Titled "Traces of You," the new LP will be available on September 5 via Bar/None Records. Compiled from demos and song fragments recorded between 1995 and 2012, the album is a poignant tribute to Schlesinger, as he is featured on every track, with the full support of his family.
New Single and Album Context
The lead single from the album, “Say You Will,” draws from a 2009 demo where Schlesinger played bass and keyboard. The band encourages fans to listen to the new single, which aims to rekindle the nostalgia associated with their earlier works. In a statement, band member Andy Chase expressed the emotional weight of the release, saying, “The world thought Ivy was gone after 2012, and for a time we did too. And after Adam’s death in 2020 it seemed certain. So Dominique [Durand] and I are thrilled to give everyone a brand new Ivy album, with our beloved Adam playing on every song!”
Creative Rebirth from the Archives
Following their last studio album, “All Hours,” released in 2011, Ivy shifted focus towards reissuing previous works, including their debut album “Realistic” and the LP “Apartment Life.” During preparations for these reissues, the band uncovered a treasure trove of old tapes and digital files that contained a wealth of unused material. While sifting through this extensive archive in their Rhode Island studio, Chase and Durand felt compelled to revisit and complete songs featuring Schlesinger’s work.
With assistance from Bruce Driscoll, Ivy’s keyboardist and guitarist, the duo carefully selected ten tracks to create "Traces of You." The process, while emotionally taxing, allowed them to revive their connection with Schlesinger through music that had long been dormant.
Remembering Adam Schlesinger
Adam Schlesinger, who tragically passed away from COVID-19 in April 2020, was not only a key member of Ivy but also known for his work in Fountains of Wayne, Tinted Windows, and Fever High. His achievements in music extend beyond the band, with notable hits for films and television. Schlesinger earned three Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award, along with several nominations, including those for the Academy Awards and Tony Awards. Following his untimely death, the music community recognized him with tributes, including a special cover album and tributes by his fellow artists.
Significance and Impact
The release of "Traces of You" stands as a significant moment for both Ivy and the indie pop genre, serving as a heartfelt reminder of Schlesinger’s impact on music. For fans and newcomers alike, this album not only promises to deliver the sound that Ivy is celebrated for but also allows listeners a chance to reconnect with the legacy of an artist whose influence was far-reaching.
As Ivy prepares to unveil this new chapter, the anticipation surrounding "Traces of You" reinforces the enduring power of music to unite and memorialize, illustrating the profound ways art can transcend time and circumstance. The new album, along with the digital reissues of their beloved works, positions Ivy to regain their place in the music landscape, reminding us all of the resonance of great songwriting.
