Ben Askren Shares Health Update Following Double Lung Transplant

Former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and Bellator champion Ben Askren provided a significant health update via Instagram on Wednesday, just over a week post-double lung transplant. The 40-year-old athlete detailed his challenging recovery journey, revealing harrowing experiences, including substantial weight loss and cardiac distress during his hospitalization for severe pneumonia.

In his emotional video, Askren expressed, "I haven’t given you an update in a while… This has been tough, not only on me, but on my whole family and close community." He indicated that his memory concerning his health crisis was clouded and recalled reading through his wife’s journal for insights. Between May 28 and July 2, he experienced profound health challenges, including four instances where his heart stopped for approximately 20 seconds.

Loss of Weight and Determination to Recover

The former UFC star noted the drastic impact of his illness, stating he lost around 50 pounds within 45 days, dropping to a weight he hadn’t seen since he was 15. "I got the double lung transplant and made it to the other side of it," Askren stated. Despite these hardships, he highlighted his motivation to regain strength and continue his life.

Asking for patience from his followers, he mentioned, "Hope you guys appreciate the update. Like I said, somewhere down the road, maybe Amy and I can detail everything a little more."

Community Support During His Battle

Askren developed pneumonia following a staph infection and was hospitalized in his home state of Wisconsin. As news of his health struggles spread, an impressive outpouring of support emerged from the mixed martial arts and amateur wrestling communities. "The love I felt from everybody was just amazing," Askren reflected, likening it to experiencing his own funeral. This communal support has fueled his determination to recover and contribute positively moving forward.

A Decorated Career in Combat Sports

Ben Askren’s career in combat sports is marked by notable achievements: he won the Bellator Season 2 welterweight tournament, clinched the welterweight title in 2010, and defended it four times. Later, he signed with ONE Championship, maintaining an undefeated record of 18-0 before joining the UFC. In his debut, he defeated Robbie Lawler but faced consecutive losses to Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia, leading to his retirement in 2019.

In 2021, Askren returned to professional combat sports in a boxing match against influencer Jake Paul, a bout where he lost by first-round TKO.

Reflection on the Path Ahead

Askren’s recent health challenges highlight the often-unseen struggles faced by professional athletes, underscoring the importance of community support and resilience in recovery. As he embarks on this new chapter of rebuilding his strength and health, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the overwhelming impact of collective encouragement during tough times. The journey of recovery may prove not only essential for Askren but also inspire many facing their own health battles.
